A griot, also spelled as “griotte” in some contexts, is a West African storyteller, oral historian, and musician. Griots traditionally serve as keepers of the community’s oral history, passing down stories, legends, and cultural knowledge from generation to generation through the art of storytelling, song, and music. They play a vital role in preserving the heritage and traditions of their society, often performing at social gatherings, ceremonies, and events. Griots have a revered status in many West African cultures and are respected for their wisdom, knowledge, and ability to entertain and educate through their narratives and music
Griott.org is a Zimbabwe-based African data, culture, history and infographics repository. African data is often hard to find online. All African countries contribute less than 5% of the online content. Our goal is to collect, curate, visualize aggregate and preserve African culture and data from a variety of sources. If you would like to find out more, support, or contribute to the data repository project please contact us.
