Best Zimbabwean Food Near Harare? Discover KwaTerry!

KwaTerry. It’s a name that resonates with authenticity, a Shona expression that has become synonymous with a unique experience in rural Zimbabwe. But KwaTerry is more than just a name; it’s a testament to the vision and determination of a young entrepreneur, Terrence Maphosa, who is not only serving up delicious traditional cuisine but also promoting rural tourism and sustainable agriculture.

Located approximately 150km from Harare, in the heart of Mhondoro-Ngezi, KwaTerry is a traditional restaurant that offers visitors a glimpse into the heart of rural Zimbabwean life. It’s a place where the aroma of freshly prepared sadza and flavorful stews mingles with the sounds of nature, creating an immersive cultural experience.

Terrence’s journey to establishing KwaTerry is an inspiring story of resilience and resourcefulness. Raised by a single mother in a family of six, he faced numerous challenges growing up. He often recounts how he had to sell mopane worms (madora) to afford basic necessities like school shoes and food. Despite the hardships, he persevered, and with the help of well-wishers, including his teachers, he was able to complete his education.

After graduating with a degree in Political Science, Terrence faced the harsh reality of post-graduate unemployment in Zimbabwe. Instead of succumbing to despair, he channeled his energy and determination into pursuing his passion for farming. Inspired by his background and driven by a desire to create opportunities for himself and his community, he started with rearing 400 chicks.

From those humble beginnings, Terrence’s poultry business, KwaTerry Chickens, has grown exponentially. He now rears thousands of birds and has become a successful entrepreneur, employing several people from his community.

But KwaTerry is more than just a chicken farm. It’s a multifaceted enterprise that showcases the richness of rural Zimbabwean life. The traditional restaurant, KwaTerry, serves up mouthwatering dishes prepared with locally sourced ingredients, many of them grown on Terrence’s own farm. The food is served in plates and utensils made from indigenous trees, adding a unique touch to the dining experience.

KwaTerry also offers visitors a range of activities, including fishing and quad biking, allowing them to immerse themselves in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. It’s a place where visitors can connect with nature, learn about sustainable agriculture, and experience the warmth and hospitality of rural Zimbabweans.

Terrence’s vision extends beyond his own business. He is committed to empowering other young people in his community. He has assisted hundreds of youths by giving them free roadrunner chicks to start their own poultry projects. He also organizes business networking events at KwaTerry, providing a platform for young entrepreneurs to connect and collaborate.

Terrence’s achievements have earned him recognition both locally and internationally. He has received numerous awards for his contributions to agriculture and entrepreneurship. He has also been invited to speak at prestigious events, including the World Food Programme Summit, where he shared his insights on transforming rural landscapes and inspiring youth.

KwaTerry is a testament to the power of vision, hard work, and determination. It’s a place where traditional Zimbabwean culture is celebrated, sustainable agriculture is practiced, and young people are empowered to achieve their dreams. It’s a story that inspires hope and demonstrates the potential for positive change in rural Zimbabwe.
